Global problem-solving mechanisms are not emerging to efficiently deal with our global problems. The multilateral system is no longer fit for the purpose of steering towards the global agreements that are needed in important and urgent matters. National sovereignty is often proving an effective obstacle to international agreements. At the same time many new systems solutions are emerging “on the ground” around the world. Still, injustice and inequalities between and within nations are rising, and in the end, no progress will be made unless people agree on both the natures of the problems and on what the steps towards a sustainable and inclusive future look like.
This is what the conversations at the Tällberg Forum 2011 in Sigtuna will be about, both in conversations about “the whole” and through looking at some specific parts – both regions (the Amazon, the Arctic, the Nordic countries, etc.) and systems (energy system, food/agriculture/water system, financial system, etc.).
The Tällberg Forum process will be based on preparatory work connected to these issues, through a first discussion-round at the Winter Tällberg Forum, which will take place at Voksenåsen (outside Oslo, Norway) on 10-12 February 2011.
The Tällberg process represents one of the most open and free learning processes in the world. It has no alignment to any national or stake-holder interest. Its ethics, aesthetics and usefulness lie in its open-minded search for insights and truth. Tällberg is not an activist or a promotional arena. It is there to support the learning of its participants.
For 2011, the Tällberg Forum is moving from Tällberg and Dalarna to Sigtuna, outside Stockholm. Situated 40 minutes from Stockholm, 30 minutes from Uppsala and only 15 minutes from Arlanda International Airport, Sigtuna is Sweden's oldest town, founded over 1000 years ago. Beautifully located on the shores of Lake Mälaren, the calm town is characterized by lush gardens and parks, picturesque old wooden buildings in pastel colors that date back to the 18th century, and its proximity to nature. Sigtuna is also home to two humanistic and educational institutions – Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska Läroverket (Sweden’s largest boarding school) and Sigtunastiftelsen (a private cultural foundation). The intimate atmosphere, the meeting arenas and the many hotels make the town a perfect venue for the Tällberg Forum 2011.
