A Nordic Nuclear Safety Research (NKS) seminar organised by Studsvik Nuclear AB (Studsvik) and Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co (SKB).

INTRODUCTION

The last seminar on decommissioning arranged by the NKS was held in Risø 2005. Since then there has been much activity in the field of decommissioning nuclear facilities and an influx of new people to the field. This seminar will provide an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues and exchange experiences from completed and on-going decommissioning projects as well as discuss the future.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the seminar are

  • To survey international and national regulations, recommendations and guidelines for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities
  • To exchange experiences from completed and on-going decommissioning projects
  • To show progress made in decommissioning of nuclear facilities and to identify areas for future research and development
  • To maintain and develop the knowledge in decommissioning, clearance and final disposal of waste from decommissioning projects.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The conference aims to bring together operators, regulators, scientists, consultants and contractors from the Nordic countries to exchange information and views on the topics mentioned below.

WORKING LANGUAGE

The working language of the seminar will be English. All communications, abstracts and papers must therefore be in English.

PROGRAMME

A short welcome by representatives from Studsvik and SKB will start the seminar.

Three topical sessions will cover issues relating to

  • Decommissioning and dismantling,
  • Free release of material, facilities and soil and
  • Waste management and final disposal.

Each session will contain four to six presentations. Each session is concluded with a summary of papers and posters by the chairperson. The chairperson also formulates a couple of subjects or questions to discuss in smaller groups. Conclusions at the group discussions should be written down and submitted to the chair person.

One half day is dedicated for study visits among the Studsvik facilities. Two objects are available for visits, the R2 reactor where decommissioning work is ongoing and the facility for melting of big components and scrap.
